Burn notice

Anchor Bay’s Maegan Shaner, a multi-talented athlete at the high school who also plays for the Michigan Burn travel soccer team, will play soccer at Siena Heights.
Shaner, a goalie,  has received two varsity letters in basketball and two in soccer. She has been a member of the Tars’ 2010 and 2011 district championship soccer teams.
The Burn is coached by former Siena Heights men’s soccer player Joe Gallagher. Shaner has also played with Vardar.
She is considering a career in social work. Shaner is an honor roll student at Anchor Bay. She has been a HOSA competitor, Student Council member, SADD member and a volunteer youth basketball coach.
“Siena Heights has a lot to offer and their soccer program is a winning program that I would love to be a part of,” commented Shaner.
“Maegan has the abilities to be a very good player and goalkeeper for us.  She has good size and athleticism to match her technically ability. She is also a good student and person, exactly the type of student-athlete will look to have in our program,” said Siena Heights coach Scott Oliver.

A Chip on her shoulder

Romeo High senior Taylor Marie-Hadley Waters has signed a National Letter of Intent to play softball for coach Margo Jonker at Central Michigan University.
Waters was one of four seniors who signed to play for CMU. The others were Michelle Dornan (Grand Haven/Allendale HS), Evelyn Lorimer (Spring Lake/Spring Lake HS) and Katelyn Rentschler (Etiwanda, Calif./Etiwanda HS).
“The 2012 recruiting class is one that will bring excitement to our team,” said Jonker. “As a group they have the combination of foot speed and power. They play the positions we need depth in. Each brings a passion and a love for the game. It will be exciting to watch them progress.”
Waters is an outfielder for Romeo coach Dave McIntyre. She is a three-year varsity player and has been named all county, all conference, all district and all region.
“Taylor is a speedster who loves to play the game. She is a slapper who will put pressure on the defense, steal bases, as well as run the outfield to flag balls down,” said Jonker.
